After a career in academics, I've become what I suppose I have always been destined to be: a writers of imaginary fiction.  Earlier, as a historian, I taught at the University of Maryland and Columbia University and abroad in Europe and Australia.  During that time, I published eight books in American cultural history.  But now I am devoting my entire attention to composing novels and short stories.
